Benefits Of Walking

7 Incredible Results You'll Get From Walking 30 Minutes A Day

If you’re planning to get back to walking, here are some benefits you may see…

- Your mood will improve

- Your creative juices will start flowing

- Your jean will get a little looser - Daily walking increases metabolism by burning extra calories and by preventing muscle loss

- You'll slash your risk of chronic disease - lowers your blood sugar levels, lower blood pressure and may reduce the risk of stroke by 20% to 40%

- You'll keep your legs looking great.

- You'll start to get more "regular." A regular walking routine can greatly improve gastric mobility

- Your other goals will start to seem more reachable. When you become a regular walker, you will have established a regular routine—and when you have a routine, you are more likely to continue with the activity and take on new healthy behaviors

Another great way to keep up with your walking goals is to sign up for 5K or 10K walks.  One good example is The Trick or Treat 5K, presented by Planet Fitness, benefiting Employment For Seniors.

Talk With Your Family About Alzheimer's During Intergenerational Month

In 1987, Fountain Institute, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was formed by Sandy Kraemer, a Colorado Springs attorney, to research intergenerational issues. The resulting research identified the need to set aside a time each year to focus on intentionally connecting generations to better communicate age-related gratitude and needs.

Why are we spotlighting this?  Health issues within the family can be stressful, and one of the most stressful can be Alzheimer’s.  Part of living well with Alzheimer’s is adjusting to your “new normal” and helping family and friends do the same. Knowing what to expect and what resources are available can make the process easier for you and those close to you.

We spoke with Anne Farley, Community Relations Director, and Deborah Taylor, Director of Marketing, at The Ganzhorn Suites Specialized Memory Care, about how important is it for families to discuss how they will prepare and handle a family member's dementia diagnosis and care.

It's time for your flu shot!

Today's Health And Wellness' Mark Nuce speaks with Kroger pharmacist Julie Simbola.

Flu shots not only protect you but also others around you by controlling the spread of the flu.
Everyone is encouraged to get a flu shot, especially the very young (6 months or older) and older adults, particularly adults over 65. While you get your flu shot, make sure you check on your pneumonia vaccine.  They are extremely important for older adults, as well as adults with compromised immune systems.
